The right to be free and equal in dignity and rights-TEAM 1

 ONLINE MEETING-TEAM 1

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages

The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).

Article 1

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Dignity is the foundation of all human rights. Human beings have rights, and should be treated with utmost care, precisely because each one possesses intrinsic worth.

Mary Robinson, another former human rights chief, regards dignity as “an inner sense of self-worth,” a concept that “evokes an empathy with the other, connecting us one to the other.”

It has also provided the springboard for new interpretations of human rights. As Robinson said, “in our interconnected world, that empathy must expand to tackling the gross inequalities that raise issues of justice.”

Article 1 sets equality as the all-embracing overarching theme of the Declaration, one that has been the basis for elaborating rights for many – including minorities, indigenous people and people with disabilities.

Dignity (a word that appears five times in the Declaration) is on the one hand an irrefutable argument, and on the other an ambiguous concept, not always easily translated into legislation. Even so, dignity now is recognized as a right in more than 160 of the world’s constitutions (of 193 UN members), compared to only five countries that used the term in their constitutions in 1945.

The Right to move freely in and out of a country

My students researched on the right to move freely in and out of a country and created a page, working together with our partners from Croatia (Kristina Strinavic). This page was added to our common calendar of the E-twinning project "Let's fight for a better world".

The right to EDUCATION

Greece and Turkey team work

Teachers:
Greek team: Karakasidou Alexandra, Bouziani Maria
Turkey team: Ilkay Polat

The partners work collaboratively (in groups of 2) with the aim of creating a book on human rights - the theme of the project for the month of December - in which each group should cover two pages.
Vyronia Junior High School collaborates with BALÇOVA 80. YIL ORHANGAZİ ORTAOKULU-TURKEY on "the right to education"
Our initial plan is to make a poster with 6 slogans related to our topic (3 per group)

At school, students talked about human rights and especially children's rights in the classroom and in the Literature lesson. They then focused on the right to education. Answered questions such as: "What does school offer us?", "Why should I go to school?" etc and then suggested their own slogans and voted for the ones they thought were the best (When the road to school is a big adventure. Incredible photos with children from all over the world…)
After that, the teams collaboratively wrote and illustrated (using PIXTON)  a story about a child who wants to go to school but can't (including a 6-panel comic). The story was created step by step (like a chain) using the web 2.0 tool PIXTON where we formed our common digital class.

Here are the results of our work

Creating and voting our project logo

In our class, we created logos for the project, working in teams. Afterwards, the students voted for their favourite logo to be sent for the project. The logo with the scales won! Its meaning: we are all equal!

Presentation of tolerance with ppt to my students (6/11/23)

On 6th November my students had the chance to be presented with a ppt on tolerance. We talked about the different types of tolerance, we reflected upon its importance and we all concluded that tolerance stops violence.

Presentation of the project to my students

For the first time our school participates in an E-twinning project. I presented the project to my students on 11th October and started working on it right away! So, let's fight for a better world!

Human Right Day!

 Human Rights Day!

10 December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
